Class Descriptions

Jazz - Jazz is a form of dance that showcases a dancer's individual style and originality. This type of dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. To excel in jazz, dancers need a strong background in ballet, as it encourages grace and balance.  We strongly encourage dancers to train in ballet if taking a jazz class.  Jazz shoes and form fitting dance wear is required.

Turns & Leaps - Required for Company members, but open to all TCDC students.  These classes will focus on jazz technique of turns, leaps, jumps and progressions across the floor.  These classes will NOT learn any choreography or routine to be performed at the end of the session.  Participation in Level III and Advanced Turns & Leaps must be approved by the Director.

Ballet - Ballet is the foundation of all forms of dance taught at TCDC.  Students will learn safe and proper alignment as well as correct ballet terminology.  It is a highly disciplined dance form and will be taught as such.  Solid ballet technique is essential in a students progression in all forms of dance, as well as their mental and physical well being.  Black color leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes required, hair pulled back into a bun.

Hip Hop/Street Dance - H-I-P - Higher Inner Peace.  H-O-P - Helping Other People.  Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking, locking, and popping which were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States.  Students will learn basic hip hop steps set to age appropriate hip hop music.  Baggy "gym" clothes and sneakers required.

Hip Hop Elements - Required for Company, but open to all TCDC students looking to train more.  This class will NOT learn a routine to be performed at the end of the session.  It will focus on the elements and techniques of hip hop and street dance.  Dancers will learn and begin to master the basics of popping, breaking, locking, boogaloo and combining these basics into choreography combinations.
Lyrical - Lyrical is a fusion of ballet and jazz dance techniques.  Lyrical dance challenges choreographers and dancers to use motion to interpret music and express emotion.  A lyrical dancers' movements attempt to show the meaning of the music.

Contemporary - Contemporary dance is the exploration of the total movement potential of the body. It differs from commercial or competitive dance in that it is not bound by set standards, as well as defined styles such as ballet or Jazz dance. Instead, it seeks to express a personalized vision, often through experimentation and collaboration for the development of new, more individualized approaches to the moving body and choreographic possibilities.  Form fitting dance attire required.  Jazz shoes and/or bare feet permitted.

Tap/Ballet and Jazz/Hip Hop Combo Classes - Our combo classes are offered to our younger dancers, giving them a small taste of the styles of ballet, tap, jazz and hip hop.  Please see clothing requirements under specific styles as stated above.

Tap - Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by using the sound of one's tap shoes hitting the floor as a percussive instrument. As such, it is also commonly considered to be a form of music.  Students will learn basic tap steps set to fun upbeat music.  Tap shoes required.  Please refrain from wearing long baggy pants, as this can interfere with tap sounds and create an unsafe learning environment.

Special Needs - In this fantastic class, students with special needs (kids AND adults) are invited to TCDC to explore the art of hip hop!  We will learn the absolute basics of hip hop and get the dancers moving and grooving. It's an amazing form of empowerment and community!

  • The Nurturing Pathways® curriculum is built upon the “Four Legs for Learning;” bonding and attachment, dance concepts, energy coordination patterns, and sensory pathways.  These pillars support the fact that young children need to move to learn and play to grow.
  • The Nurturing Pathways® curriculum targets age appropriate learning and growth encompassing cognitive, physical, sensory and social-emotional development as well as parent education.
  • Nurturing Pathways® offers creative dance classes for families, parent education workshops, educators’ workshops, licensing for instructors and a line of Creative Play Products™.
